The former president attacked the Brazilian electoral machine system
For 51% of those interviewed by Datafolha, the former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) should be convicted for his campaign against electronic voting machines and made ineligible for eight years, as required by law. Another 45% believe he is innocent and should not be punished by the Higher Electoral Court (TSE).
The percentage that defends Bolsonaro’s ineligibility, heard between March 29 and 30, believes that the loss of political rights is the most correct punishment for the former president, given that Bolsonaro has repeatedly attempted to discredit the Brazilian electoral system .
However, another 45% argue that the former chief executive should be released by the Electoral Justice to contest the upcoming elections.
Of the 2,028 surveyed by Datafolha, 4% of respondents were unable to assess the stimulated demand. The poll’s margin of error is plus or minus two percentage points.
The TSE advanced in the process to make it ineligible
According to Reuters, the Superior Electoral Court has concluded the collection of evidence in the most advanced procedure that could render Jair Bolsonaro ineligible. The action concerns the attacks made on the Brazilian system of electronic voting machines, in a meeting with ambassadors at the Palácio da Alvorada, in the middle of last year.
On Friday 31, the inspector general of electoral justice, Benedito Gonçalves, issued an order in which he confirmed the completion of the evidence collection phase, called instruction. He opened a deadline for the Electoral Public Prosecutor and the parties – the PDT and the defense of Bolsonaro’s electoral card – to manifest themselves.
According to a source TSE informed the Reuters, the parties have until Monday 10 and the electoral deputy until 12 to demonstrate themselves in the process. Once this is done, Gonçalves prepares the report –a summary of the trial– and his vote, and asks for a date to judge the case. It will be up to the president of the TSE, Alexandre de Moraes, to fix the date of the trial. There are currently no forecasts for this to happen.
It was in this action that the so-called draft coup was included. This document was found by Federal Police in January during a search and seizure of the home of Bolsonaro’s former Justice Minister and former Secretary of Public Security for the Federal District, Anderson Torres. He was arrested on charges of failing to act as head of security to prevent the January 8 attacks.
This draft decree sought to establish the conditions for reversing the electoral victory of current President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) through a state of defense in the TSE, not foreseen in the Constitution, indicating that it could be a coup state in the planning stage.
Bolsonaro’s allies fear that he, who returned to the country last week, will be condemned by the TSE and rendered ineligible. The former president still responds to more than a dozen election investigations at the TSE itself and criminal investigations at the Supreme Court and lower courts. One of the recent cases concerns his alleged irregular receipt of jewels given as gifts by the Saudi government. He, who is due to testify on Tuesday at PF on the case, has denied wrongdoing in the case.
