The ship cannot be saved due to bad weather conditions
A ship in distress in the Mediterranean Sea, with around 500 migrants, is still waiting for help, Italian and Maltese NGOs and authorities inform this Tuesday (4). The boat managed to contact the alert phone this Monday afternoon (3).
According to the NGO Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), their ship Geo Barents has visual contact with the migrants, but there are no safety conditions to carry out rescue operations due to the bad weather conditions in the area. The action would be dangerous for both foreigners and rescuers.
This Tuesday the telephone service was called again for help, but the situation remains unchanged. If the boat from the NGO or the authorities of the countries gets too close, there is a risk of shipwreck.
In Salerno, even today, the Ocean Viking boat, of the NGO SOS Mediterraneé, managed to dock in the port in the early hours of the morning. In all, 92 people arrived – 51 of whom were minors, with only three accompanied – who were rescued in Libyan waters in recent days.
According to the latest update from the Italian Interior Ministry, as of April 3, 28,034 people had arrived in the country through the Mediterranean Sea, more than three times as many as in the period of 2021, when there were 8,394 migrants, and about four times more than in 2022, when there were 6,832.
However, due to adverse weather conditions, the country has seen few arrivals since the beginning of April, with no entry at all on the 2nd. .
