A live-action version of Disney’s ‘Moana: A Sea of Adventures’ (2016) is officially in development. The announcement was made by Dwayne Johnson, who also revealed that the actor, better known as The Rock, will be playing Maui, a demigod friend of Moana.
The live-action “Moana” joins a growing list of Disney animated films that have been given a live-action version; this is the case with “Aladdin” in 2019 and “Beauty and the Beast” in 2017. It is worth mentioning that there is also a live-action “The Little Mermaid”, which will debut on May 26 this year.
“It’s exciting to be working with these amazing partners to tell such a meaningful story on a live-action canvas, especially as we celebrate 100 years of storytelling at Disney.said Sean Bailey, president of film production at Walt Disney Studios.
The movie ‘Moana’ tells the story of a restless young woman who goes on a mission to save her people. During her journey, she meets the powerful demigod Maui, who guides her in her quest to find a fabled island. Together they sail across the ocean on a journey full of discovery, humor, excitement and challenge.
“I am deeply touched and filled with gratitude for bringing Moana’s beautiful story to the live-action canvas. This story is my culture and this story is emblematic of the grace and warrior strength of our people. I wear this culture proudly on my skin and in my soul, and this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to reunite with Maui, inspired by the spirit of my late grandfather, Peter Maivia, is profound to me.”, said The Rock, thanking Disney for the invitation.
For the uninitiated, Maui’s character was partly inspired by Peter Maivia, a WWE wrestler known to be part of the Anoa’i family of professional wrestlers originally from American Samoa. Father of Ata Johnson (mother of The Rock), he was the grandfather of Dwayne Johnson, and died in 1982 in Hawaii. The information was confirmed by The Rock himself on Twitter after fans noticed similarities.
A filming start date or release for the live-action version of ‘Moana’ has not been announced. There is no information yet on who will play the real-life version of the film’s protagonist.
