Another production of the “Harry Potter” franchise may be on the way: according to information from BloombergWarner Bros. has closed a deal to produce a wizard universe series for HBO Max, its streaming service.
Also according to the news portal, sources have indicated that Rowling will follow the project only in the creative part, and not as the main architect. Furthermore, the negotiations would be at the beginning, without many details on characters, release dates or any other information.
It’s no secret, however, that Warner Bros. has long been looking to further expand the Harry Potter franchise. Before Discovery’s acquisition of WarnerMedia in 2022, there were already rumors of the production of a series that would tell the stories of Rowling’s books, the writer’s best sellers.
It’s worth noting that, if production is confirmed, the series should already debut under the new HBO Max and Discovery+ emblem (understand the merger here). News of the possible development, including, comes as HBO has a shareholder meeting scheduled for April 12 — the type of event usually heralds future news and releases.
The Harry Potter film franchise was launched by Warner in 2001 and concluded in 2011, with a total of eight productions. The films grossed more than $7.7 billion at the global box office and further popularized the ‘Potter’ brand.
Even with a 12-year hiatus since the last film, the brand has continued to expand on the market, spawning (in addition to spin-offs) a hit Broadway production, ‘Harry Potter and the Cursed Child’, and to the recent hit ‘The Hogwarts Legacy’.
