WHAT IS ROSACEA?

Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory disease that leaves the skin sensitive, with redness, varicose veins and, in some cases, can cause spots with pus.

“It mainly affects the cheeks, nose and chin areas. In men, the nasal region may have thicker skin, with sebaceous glands increasing the size of this area. It can also occur on the scalp, neck and décolleté,” says IL doctor Vittorio Becharadermatologist member of the Brazilian Society of Dermatology (SBD) and professor of Cosmiatria and Dermatological Diseases at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ).

In addition to heat, cold, alcohol, intense exercise and hormonal swings, stress is also a factor that contributes to the onset of rosacea. The doctor explains that moments of tension cause our body to release adrenaline and cortisol, two hormones that cause an increase in systemic inflammatory levels and cutaneous vasodilation. However, it is worth mentioning that the causes of the problem are still unknown.

The dermatological disease is divided into four grades, with grade I, diagnosed in Virginia, being the most frequent and characterized by redness and the presence of small vessels on the skin, called spider veins. In more advanced degrees, it can even compromise eye health, causing dryness and irritation in the eyes.

“Since there is no cure, its treatment is based on controlling triggers and symptoms. In addition to the use of skin-friendly products, such as soothing and repairing creams, topical medications (ivermectin, metronidazole, brimonidine or oxymetazoline) can Oral antibiotic medications, Roaccutane and probiotics may also be prescribed. Sunscreen is essential, as the sun is one of the main triggers of the disease.
