The FBI report points to Russian spies operating in Brazil

British media pointed to another man who claimed to be of Austrian descent; he presented himself as a Brazilian businessman and signed contracts with the government.

The FBI has released a report detailing the activities of alleged Russian spies in Brazil. A suspect, who pretended to be Brazilian, had a company in Rio de Janeiro and did business with the federal government: he has disappeared. Others have been caught leaving the country. The FBI is the equivalent of the Federal Police here in Brazil.

One of them, Sergey Vladimirovich Cherkasov, 37, has photos from 2008 wearing a Russian Armed Forces uniform. He is accused of maintaining a Brazilian name, operating illegal espionage and promoting fraud resulting from illegal activities in the United States.

Cherkasov reportedly arrived in Brazil in 2012, where he settled under a fake Brazilian identity under the name Victor Müller Ferreiraborn in Niterói (RJ), on April 4, 1989. Undercover as a student, he moved to the United States in 2018 to carry out an internship, before returning to the country.

Presenting himself as the son of a Brazilian with a Portuguese and raised in Argentina, “Ferreira” was arrested in April 2022 after being deported by immigration to the Netherlands. He is still in prison and under investigation for espionage, money laundering and corruption. He has already been sentenced to 15 years in prison..

British media revealed another possible Russian spy who claimed to have been born in Brazil. He would be the son of Austrians, posing as a Brazilian businessman in the field of technology. It is also alleged that he entered into contracts with the federal government. The Ministry of Defense has specified that these contracts are on the Transparency Portal and have been signed by the commands of the Navy and the Army.

Another of the alleged spies mentioned in the FBI report is a Russian colonel who went by the name of himself in Brazil José Assis Giammaria; his name in Russian is still unknown.
