InMail | How LinkedIn Messages work

InMail is part of the LinkedIn Premium feature list and allows you to send messages to any profile outside the list of connections

InMail is a feature of LinkedIn which allows you to send messages to people who are not in your connection list. The tool is part of the benefits of LinkedIn Premium, a paid membership service for the social network.

Sending works on a credit basis: each conversation started charges one unit, and LinkedIn returns the amount when the person replies to the message. It is an option for those who want to expand their network within the platform and facilitate contact with recruiters, entrepreneurs or potential job candidates.

What is the difference between InMail messages and conventional messages?

The LinkedIn common mailbox can only be used to send private messages to connections on the social network, i.e. to profiles added from your account. In this case, there are no limits to the sendings or the chats started.

However, some profiles may take a while to accept connection requests or already have a complete list of contacts on the platform. For this situation, the alternative is to use InMail and start a conversation with people outside your network, but with a message limit.

How does InMail work on LinkedIn?

InMail consists of a message with up to 200 characters in the title and 2,000 characters in the subject field. To start a conversation, simply join LinkedIn Premium and open the profile of anyone outside your network. Then click the “Send Message” button and enter your text.

Each message you send consumes an InMail credit limit on the Premium plan. The credit package is renewed every month and the platform returns the balance amount when the beneficiary replies.

How many messages can I send per month?

The amount varies depending on the LinkedIn Premium subscription plan. See the difference:

  • Premium Career: 5;
  • Premium Deals: 15;
  • Sales Navigator Core: 50;
  • Recruiter Lite: 30.

To check the remaining credits in the profile just log in linkedin.com/premium/my-premium and see the InMail tab.

There are also cases of profiles with the Open Profile feature enabled. This feature also does part of the Premium plans and allows anyone to send a message for free, even offline.

How to write a good InMail message

Some practices can help you compose the message and get a quick response. Despite the large character limit, it’s very important to create succinct and factual content so that the recipient understands the entire topic.

Also, end the text with a hook to get a response. It could be a question, an invitation or even a suggestion.
