Vasco: one week before his Brazilian debut, understand what Barbieri needs to settle into the team

The team lost offensive fluidity from the moment the midfield started being used with three defensive midfielders

This Saturday, at 10, Vasco faces Resende, in São Januário, in what should be the last training match for their debut in the Brazilian championship. Coach Maurício Barbieri conducted tests and experiments, trying to adapt the team. The mission is to restore the offensive fluidity that was present in most of the games of the season.

Before losing the first semi-final match against Flamengo, Vasco came from a positive sequence of five consecutive victories, including in the classics with Botafogo and Rubro-Negro himself. But in one week Cruz-Maltino was eliminated from the Campeonato Carioca and from the Copa do Brasil, bringing distrust on the work of the technical commission.

It was evident in these matches that Maurício Barbieri thinks of Andrey Santos as the first defensive midfielder of the team, above all for the quality of the jewel in the ball’s delivery and in the articulation of the plays. However, the team did not adapt that way and Rodrigo returned to the starting lineup, forming the midfield with Andrey Santos and Jair.

In this way Vasco was more balanced, but offensively less effective. In the friendly against Athletic-MG the team was predictable, especially in midfield, with Andrey Santos and Jair uninspired. The 2-0 defeat angered the fans, who called for reinforcements, mainly a number 10 shirt, but only Rwan Cruz has since been signed and the player is a striker.

In addition to the intense training, the week has been under a lot of pressure for the players to get back to performing as before. The debut in the Brazilian championship is on the 15th, against Atlético-MG. Being a strong opponent, especially in the Mineirão, the tendency is to keep the midfield with three defensive midfielders, thus maintaining the defensive balance. The challenge is therefore to improve offensively.
