To conquer Carioca, Fluminense will have to repeat a feat they have not achieved in nine years in the knockout phase

The team fails to overcome the two-goal lead in the first game since the 2014 Copa do Brasil. The situation in the finals is even more delicate

As soon as he enters the field on Sunday (9), at the Maracanã, due to Carioca’s decision, Fluminense will put his history to the test. Tricolor das Laranjeiras have not been able to overcome a two-goal deficit for around nine years. Flamengo won the first match 2-0.

The most recent moment happened on April 10, 2014. The feat happened in the Copa do Brasil that year.

In the first stage of the tournament, Fluminense suffered a 3-1 defeat against Horizonte-CE. Jajá, Marciel and Dico scored the goals for Galo do Tabuleiro, while Conca scored for the tricolor team.

However, the redemption came to the Maracanã. In manager Cristóvão Borges’ debut, Fluminense saw Conca, Rafael Sóbis, Wagner, Gum and Fred secure the table with a 5-0 defeat to secure their place.

Subsequently the tricolors suffered two eliminations. In 2017, the team suffered a 3-1 defeat in the first leg of the round of 16 of the Copa do Brasil. In the second leg, Gremista won 2-0, while the following year Athletico-PR eliminated Fluminense with two 2-0 victories.

IN THE FINAL…

The scenario, however, becomes extremely challenging when it comes to decisions in the 21st century. In the Copa Libertadores, Fluminense saw LDU take advantage of a 4-2 first leg. Bieller, Guerrón, Campos and Urrutia scored for the Ecuadorians, and Conca and Thiago Neves reduced for the tricolors.

At the Maracanã, the Laranjeiras side saw Thiago Neves score three times, while Luís Bolaños conceded. On penalties, Los Albos became champions of the continental tournament.

The meeting took place in the decision of the Sul-Americana the following year. LDU opened 5-1, with three goals from Méndez and goals from Salas and De La Cruz (Marquinho scored for the Tricolore). Fluminense saw Diguinho, Fred and Gum score, but the 3-0 was not enough for the title to go to Laranjeiras.

Strengthened by the 3-1 victory over Sporting Cristal in their Copa Libertadores debut, the team led by Fernando Diniz is looking to strengthen itself to face Flamengo. Confidence passes through the impetus of Germán Cano, author of a brace in the duel with Los Celestes.

Fla-Flu takes place on Sunday (9), at 18:00. Flamengo can be champions even if they lose by goals. If Fluminense win by two goals, the final will be decided on penalties.
