A 50-year-old man and his 11-year-old daughter were killed after Russian forces attacked a residential building in the town of Zaporizhzhia in southeastern Ukraine on Sunday, officials said.
Ukraine’s emergency service also said a 46-year-old woman, identified as the wife and mother of the victims, was pulled from the rubble.
City council secretary Anatoliy Kurtev said two missiles destroyed one building and damaged dozens more in the night attack.
“Severe retribution for the occupiers for this criminal war is inevitable,” he wrote on messaging app Telegram.
Rescuers dug through mounds of concrete and other rubble early Sunday amid the renewed howl of air raid sirens.
The shattered walls revealed the charred remains of the family’s living room, where a television was broken and broken cabinets still hung.
A body, which locals said was that of the dead man, was wrapped in a blanket nearby.
“It’s a shame, they were a young family,” said neighbor Viktor Hrankin, 72.
Regional governor Yuriy Malashko told Reuters the injured woman was taken to hospital and is in serious condition.
This was the latest in a string of attacks on civilian targets in the region as the full-scale invasion of Moscow drags on into its second year.
