Crowned Best Documentary at the 2022 BAFTAs, two awards at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival, the 2022 Critics Choice Awards, and Best Documentary at the 2023 Academy Awards, Navalny retells the story of the notorious Russian challenger. Jailed for 9 years until March 2022 for fraud, which he denies.
In August 2020, a plane connecting Siberia to Moscow was forced to make an emergency landing due to the alarming illness of one of its passengers, Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, who suddenly fell seriously ill.
He was taken to a local hospital in Siberia and eventually evacuated to Berlin, where doctors diagnosed him with Novichok poisoning, a nerve agent involved in attacks on other opponents of the Russian government. President Vladimir Putin immediately questioned the findings and denied any involvement in the case.
During his recovery, Navalny and his team, who already had a massive social media following, joined forces with the renowned independent investigative journalism group Bellingcat, as well as other international news outlets, to investigate the assassination attempt and find evidence of Kremlin involvement.
“Our wretched, suffering motherland needs saving. It has been pillaged, wounded, engaged in a war of aggression, and turned into a prison run by the most shameless and deceitful villains. Any opposition to this gang, no matter how symbolic, given my current limited abilities. – Important”, Wrote in January 2023 Putin’s favorite Peev, imprisoned for two years under a very harsh regime. He is barred from visits by lawyers or relatives who condemn the Kremlin’s attempt “kill” just a little.
