How Hamilton Designed an Exclusive Watch for the Chinese Blockbuster ‘The Wandering Earth 2’

All the gears in a movie are important, even the most imperceptible ones. All the details help to create a new world on the screen, and a great example is found in the collaboration between Hamilton and the Chinese film ‘The Wandering Earth 2’, by Frant Gwo. The watch brand, in its commitment to the film industry, has designed a special model for this science fiction production, sequel to ‘The Wandering Earth’ (2019).

Gwo, who is an ambassador for the brand, asked them to create an exclusive watch for his new film around an idea that was in tune with the story: the design sought to represent the concept of a round sky enveloping a square earth, an ancient Chinese philosophy and artistic conception of the film. So Hamilton rose to the challenge and became the film’s exclusive watchmaking partner, for which he provided dozens of watches that can be seen on the actors’ wrists.

After the spectacular box office data of ‘The Wandering Earth’, the most successful Chinese science fiction blockbuster in history, the sequel was launched with the same team headed by Frant Gwo and producer Liu Cixin. The story follows the adventures of a group of astronauts who must find a solution to save Earth, which is once again in danger on its journey through the universe. The cast consists of Wu Jing, Li Xuejian, Sha Yi, Ning Li, Wang Zhi and Zhu Yan Manzi and Andy Lau.

After four years of pre-production and filming, ‘The Wandering Earth 2’ was released on January 22, coinciding (like its predecessor) with the first day of the Chinese New Year 2023. Thus, the result of his collaboration with Hamilton could finally be seen, who wants to represent the connection between humans as understood in the film. As explained by the brand, the watch has a regulating sphere located in a transparent square case, representing the Chinese philosophy of the round sky that surrounds a square earth.

In addition, as explained in detail from Hamilton, “the white or black spheres show the symbol of The Wandering Earth and the concave and convex textures represent the vast universe; the hands and the crown are presented in red and evoke the Chinese power that explores the vast universe in the film; the transparent case reflects the skin of the wrist that is under the watch and that is the color of the earth”. And they continue: “We must look up to see the immense sky and down to see the earth, another idea that reinforces the concept of the round sky enveloping a square earth”.

Continuing with the taste for details, each version of this exclusive timepiece is limited to 122 pieces, in honor of the release date of ‘The Wandering Earth 2’ (was January 22, 2023 in China), and will be available in June 2023 in mainland China only. Thus, Hamilton continues to expand its presence in the seventh art, having collaborated with more than 500 films and television series since 1932. The brand was also an official sponsor of the Fotogramas de Plata 2022.
