When you’re shooting a big popcorn horror, the ideal reaction you’re looking for in a sold out crowd is a deafening scream from the audience. It’s all about the buildup, the terrifying release, and the resulting nervous laughter — a sign that your fears have worked exactly as intended. For Rob Savage, the director behind it Guest AND DASHCAMthis is exactly the reaction he got when he screened his first big Hollywood performance, bogeyman. In fact, his Stephen King adaptation elicited such raucous reactions when it was first tested in front of an audience that it required some editing.

As the title suggests, bogeyman it’s about big fears that shake the audience. “I’m a big scary guy,” she says. “That’s the most rewarding part, when you see them play to an audience and you can hear them take the bait, and then you hear it land.” If it is an exception to the complete freedom of Guest AND DASHCAM, Savage seems to have had a smooth transition to the studio system. “I was afraid of becoming a big horror story, but every frame of this film is the film I wanted to make,” he enthuses.
Farther, bogeyman he landed the person Savage really wanted to impress: Stephen King himself. “We rented his theater and showed him the film in Maine,” explains the director. “I didn’t go there because I was afraid it would make a Light on it and I absolutely hate it. But apparently she skipped a lot and then sent this beautiful message to everyone who worked on the film. And the next morning I get an email that says “From Stephen King”. And he says, ‘Robert, I’m still thinking about your movie the next morning. The king has spoken, let’s go. bogeyman.
