Immobile suffers a broken rib after a car accident in Rome

The Lazio captain’s car collided with a tram in the Italian capital

Striker Ciro Immobile, of Lazio, suffered a violent road accident this Sunday morning (16), in Rome, capital of Italy, and was diagnosed with an open fracture to his right rib and spinal trauma.

In a note, the blue club let it be known that the athlete is fine. “Lazio’s medical team informs that, today, following a road accident, the athlete Ciro Immobile suffered a distension trauma of the spine and an open fracture of the right rib. Conditions are good at the moment”. read in the text.

The vehicle on which the Biancoceleste captain was transporting his two daughters collided with a tram of line 19 while crossing the Matteotti bridge, between Prati and Flaminio, around 8:30 (local time).

According to preliminary information, the tram went off the rails and hit the car, which was destroyed. In addition to Immobile, eight other people were affected by the accident, including tram passengers, who were taken to the Policlínico A. Gemelli hospital for checks.

Speaking to the Italian police, the player explained that the electric tram would overtake him at a red light. The authorities have opened an investigation into the case.

“The electric tram went through a red light. Luckily I’m fine, my arm just hurts a little,” the Italian told the press.

Immobile and her daughters were also taken to the hospital.

Examinations revealed that the centre-forward suffered a “trauma of spinal sprain and open fracture of the right eleventh rib”.

“The footballer remains under observation in the emergency medicine department directed by Professor Francesco Franceschi of the Agostino Gemelli IRCCS University Hospital in Rome,” added the Lazio note.

Immobile’s eldest daughter is also in the same medical center, while the youngest was transported to the Child Jesus. Both suffered only scratches. The passengers, on the other hand, suffered grazes and were transferred in “green code” to various hospitals in the capital.

“Our concern now is for everyone’s physical condition. The tram driver has entered the [hospital] Umberto I in red code, which later became orange. Fortunately he was discharged immediately with a seven day prognosis. I heard him on the phone: his concern was the girls from Immobile. Now the question is everyone’s physical condition,” Eugenio Patanè, Rome’s mobility councilor, told ANSA.

“Then there will be time to understand the dynamics of the accident. Testimonies have already been collected by the Municipal Police, in particular from a witness who was stopped at a red light and who saw the dynamics. The impact was very strong: the car hit the tram which went off the tracks,” he added.

According to Patanè, “the tram weighs 18 tons and at that point it left the line and went beyond the relief. At that point the tram weighs six tons. The Municipal Police should investigate, perhaps with possible videos”.

“The collision took place between the right front of the SUV and the left front of the tram,” concluded the councilor.
