This South Korean series, not for children under 16, turned our brains upside down at CANNESERIES 2023

What is it about?

Hyeon Soo, in the middle of negotiating the price of sexual services provided by Jo Young, finds herself trapped and priced out at an auction house that is part of the human organ trade. Instantly, various parts of his body are for sale and many people start shouting about the purchase prices.

When his kidney is sold to Geuk Raul, an earthquake occurs and the building begins to collapse. Any crime can be buried under the latter; People will then become monsters for money.

“The Deal”, a new rip-off from South Korea

This is one of the terrifying curiosities of the official competition of the sixth edition of the CANNESERIES festival, and it comes to us from South Korea: The Deal is a horror thriller, prohibited for children under 16, that turns our brains and guts upside down.

It is an adaptation of the 2015 short film of the same name by director Chung-Hyun Lee (who directed Netflix’s The Call). Director Jun Woo-sung, who was part of the production of the original short film, expanded and expanded the story of the deal into six 35-minute episodes.

The deal always takes the starting point of negotiating with mysterious and dangerous strangers to buy innocent body parts, but adds a twist of the apocalypse with an earthquake that disrupts the buyers’ plans. Victims, buyers and executioners find themselves in a bloody and spectacular search for survivors.

The transition to series is a success, as Bargain is a perplexing thriller that never ceases to surprise us as things unfold. Defying our expectations, the series plunges us into a real descent into hell, where the heroes are ready to do anything to survive, even if it is done with the worst cruelty.

A true critic of capitalism and individualism, Bargin doesn’t play with pretensions and allusions and directly challenges our morals on major social and societal issues through the stories of characters who gradually reveal themselves.

In addition to its poignant and uncompromising remarks, the delightful South Korean series drives us to the mind at a dizzying pace thanks to masterful sequence of shots and promises good blood after watching the first two episodes full of promises and surprises.

Among the headliners of the series we find Jin Seon-kyu, who was most notably seen in the movie Space Sweepers on Netflix. It also stars Jeon Jong-seo, a rising star from South Korea who we discovered in The Burning of Lee Chang-dong and who was later seen in The Call and Money Heist: Korea, the Korean remake of La Casa de Papel. Completing the trio is actor Chang Raul, who can be seen in the Netflix series My Name.

Set to air on TVING in South Korea in October 2022, the deal could well land here after the broadcast rights were acquired by Paramount + for international. We’re crossing our fingers for quick availability so you can discover this surprising and relentless series.
