Last February, Warner Bros. announced several upcoming Lord of the Rings movies. While Peter Jackson’s original trilogy grossed $2.9 billion worldwide and remains one of cinema’s greatest fantasy achievements, reviews of these new projects have been mixed.
As reported by Variety, the famous interpreter of this precious Frodo, Elijah Wood, recently confided in GQ magazine on this topic: the actor of the legendary film series hopes only for the best.
I am fascinated and excited. I hope it will be good. I’m surprised – I don’t know why I’m surprised, because of course there would be more movies.
But above all, he hopes these new advances won’t be motivated solely by money.
“Obviously, the basis for this is the desire to make a lot of money. It’s not like a bunch of executives are going, “Let’s make really great art.” And, again, no offense, because of course it’s commerce, but great art can come from commerce. So these two things are not mutually exclusive.“
For the actor, Peter Jackson’s trilogy, he did not come from the trade. Shot in one go with a certain indifference, no one could have predicted the success of the films.
“ Born out of a passion for these books and a desire to see them produced. And hopefully ultimately that’s what drives everything forward, whatever these follow-up movies are. I hope that’s the same motivating factor at the base every time they hire a writer and filmmaker – that they explore Tolkien’s material with respect and enthusiasm.“
Shall we take the same and start over?
All that is known about the new films is that there will be “a few” based on JRR Tolkien’s books. Warner didn’t provide any additional information: so it’s unclear whether the story will take place before, after, or during the original trilogy.
In a statement to Variety , Peter Jackson and his Lord of the Rings co-stars France Walsh and Philippa Boyens previously said the studio was “up-to-date every step of the way” regarding the projects.
“We look forward to the conversation to hear their vision for the future of the franchise.Jackson, Walsh and Boyens added in their statement.
Meanwhile, Andy Serkis recently revealed that he would be interested in returning to the world of Middle-earth on the big screen. Can he play Gollum again? another creature? another character? Everything is possible.
“Peter Jackson, Fran and Philippa are the second family I’m part of and have gone on to make so many films with,” he said during the BroBible podcast. “And let me tell you, they are the best and most amazing people to work with. I think there are many other potential Middle-earth projects that could see the light of day, and if they do, I would certainly jump at the chance to rekindle that relationship. Middle-earth would never leave me.“
The original Lord of the Rings trilogy can be seen and re-watched on Amazon Prime Video.
