It’s a film that’s considered iconic, but still largely unknown to the general public. Released in 1999, Galaxy Quest depicts the adventures of a group of comedians from the science fiction series, who are considered by an alien race to be the authentic heroes of our planet.
An homage to and irreverent parody of Star Trek, this feature film assembled a cast including Tim Allen, SF icon Sigourney Weaver, the late Alan Rickman and Sam Rockwell, now an Oscar winner in Best Supporting Actor for his role in 3. Billboards.
Although the film was relatively successful upon its release, Galaxy Quest has nevertheless acquired cult status over the years, especially thanks to its multiple television reruns (on cable) as well as the VHS then DVD market. In fact, several attempts at sequels and reboots surfaced in recent years before the project was abandoned in 2016 following the death of Alan Rickman.
But it looks like Galaxy Quest is now going to make a comeback because our colleagues HollywoodReporter Reveal the launch of a TV series project for the Paramount+ platform. However, at this point, it’s still unclear whether the film will be a sequel (with the original cast returning) or a reboot with an entirely new cast.
The Galaxy Quest movie is currently available for purchase or rental on video on demand platforms.
