for that PapichaHis first feature film, Mounia Meddour, draws on his own experience as a student at the University of Algeria in the late 1990s, at the center of the “Dark Decade”, which confronted the Algerian government with various armed Islamist groups.
Despite some elements of fiction, the director also relies on the authenticity of the documentary from which it comes, filming in Algeria, writing dialogues in “françarabe”, or emphasizing Caesar’s award-winning actress Lina Khudri. The best young woman for hope for her performance.
Papicha, presented at the Un Certain Regard section of the 2019 Cannes Film Festival, the official screening of which ended with a ten-minute round of applause, hit Cruise in the head with a slap.
