Super Mario Bros: Did you miss that musical wink when Luigi’s cell phone starts ringing?

Hitting theaters on April 5th, Super Mario Bros. is a hit around the world! The film has already grossed $710 million, making it the highest-grossing video game adaptation in history.

In France, the feature film has already attracted more than 3 million viewers in 2 weeks! If Shigeru Miyamoto’s The Adventures of the Mustache Plumber is appreciated, it’s especially because of the many video game references that make up the story.

Among these winks, fans of old Nintendo consoles will definitely recognize a particular sound that is heard at the beginning of the movie.

Mario and Luigi are in a restaurant congratulating themselves on shooting a commercial for their plumbing company, which should bring them a lot of customers. They are then captured by Spike, the brothers’ rival, who delights in humiliating them.

After the fight, Luigi’s cell phone rings. If you listen closely, you’ll recognize the specific music that made fans of the GameCube, Nintendo’s console released in 2002, nostalgic.

Indeed, the call of Mario Bros. corresponds to what we hear when we turn on the little cube box. We can see the letter G slowly forming on the screen thanks to the squares collapsing one after the other to form the console’s logo. You can (re)watch that introduction in the video below.

If Nintendo chose to place this easter egg here, it’s not trivial at all. When the GameCube was released in May 2002, Luigi stole the Mario show with the console’s launch game: Luigi’s Mansion.

It was a bit of a revolution at the time, as the Green Hood’s brother was the main character instead of Nintendo’s mascot. The game was a huge success with 2.6 million copies sold. Two sequels have since been released on 3DS and Switch.

The world of Luigi’s Palace has greatly delighted gamers around the world. With the success of the Super Mario Bros. movie, will Nintendo and Illumination begin adapting this video game trilogy?

It’s not out of the question, as the franchise has the potential on paper to catch on Ghostbusters style with its grim but appealing atmosphere and hauntings. Wow!
