Bergoglio has never returned to his country since he became pontiff.
Pope Francis plans to visit his home country of Argentina in 2024.
The revelation was made in a conversation with the newspaper La Nación and raised expectations about the possibility of Jorge Bergoglio returning to his homeland for the first time since the beginning of his pontificate in March 2013.
“I want to go to the country next year”, said the Pope, according to the Argentine newspaper, which recalled that there will be no elections in Argentina next year – Francis fears that his visit will be exploited for political purposes.
“I’ve always wanted to go back,” said the Catholic leader, who also asked the newspaper not to link him to Argentine politics.
Bergoglio had planned to travel to his country in 2017, during a tour of South America, but schedule changes meant that he only went to Chile and Peru the following year.
The Pope will visit Hungary (April 28-30) and Portugal (August 3-6) and should also visit France and Mongolia by the end of the year. .
