Necronomicon Ex-Mortis…
then s‘Hell’s Possession: Awakening’ spoilers
‘Infernal Possession: The Awakening’ is the latest installment of the cult franchise ‘Infernal Possession’, directed this time by Lee Cronin. As we stated in our review of ‘Infernal Possession: Awakening’, blood, demons and infernal creatures make up a pure horror movie that, in time, will end up becoming one of the best current horror movies to be scared. However, the two big questions are:how does it relate to the original film from Sam Raimi from 1981? whatIt is a sequel, a reboot, an independent film Or even a ‘Terrifyingly Dead’ style sequel?
Although the film is set in a new location – a dilapidated Los Angeles apartment building – far from the familiar cabin-in-the-woods of the first two films and the 2013 remake, and features a cast of new characters, there are still many momentsincluding the famous book, that connect it to the original films directed by Sam Raimi who, by the way, has revealed his current favorite horror films and as he confessed in an interview with FOTOGRAMS, the creator of ‘Evil Dead’ has also surrendered to this new ‘Infernal Possession’ film.
Here’s what to see:
The Necronomicon
The biggest link to the previous films of ‘Infernal Possession’ is the Book of the Dead itself, the Necronomicon.
Is the book of flesh and blood discovered by archaeologist Raymond Knowby before the events of ‘Infernal Possession’. He has read and recorded the spells in the tome, and it is these recordings that Bruce Campbell’s Ash and his friends play, unleashing a demonic being.
In the first movie, he’s called Naturom Demonto, but in ‘Terrifyingly Dead’, from 1987, which is sort of a remake/sequel to ‘Infernal Possession’, as Ash is in the cabin for the first time (again), the book is called Necronomicon Ex-Mortis, and we learn that it was discovered by Knowby during an archaeological dig.
At the end of ‘Terrifyingly Dead’, Knowby’s daughter Annie reads the book to stop the demons, but reciting the pages opens a portal that sucks Ash and his car into the Middle Ages.

It’s in the third movie. ‘The army of darkness’where the appearance of the Necronomicon provides a link explaining how so much ‘Infernal Possession: The Awakening’ as ‘Infernal Possession’ 2013 -none of which are direct sequels to the first three films- they could share the same universe demonic.
Trying to return to his own time from the Middle Ages (‘Army of Darkness’ picks up where ‘Terrifyingly Dead’ left off), Ash He is sent on a quest by a sage to find the Necronomicon, but when he reaches the place where the book is found, finds not one, but three copies of the Book of the Dead.
Take one of them, but what about the other two? One idea is that these other books are the ones that appear in ‘Infernal Possession’ of 2013 and ‘Infernal Possession: The Beginning’ of 2023.
It would make sense if there was a book for Ash, which he has in the first three movies and also in the TV series, ‘Ash vs Evil Dead,’ and the books that appear in the other movies are different copies.
Of course the star Bruce Campbell agrees with this theory..

“There are three of these books out there, as we found out in ‘Army of Darkness,’ so you never know where they’re going to turn up,” he told ‘Collider’. “So this story, ‘Hell’s Possession: Awakening,’ is really ‘Where’s the book now?’ The book is in a specific location in Los Angeles and a series of circumstances release it back into the world. and lands on a specific family in a gritty old Los Angeles skyscraper. It’s great, it’s a great stage.”
It makes a lot of sense. In the ‘Possession from Hell’ reboot, the film ends with the sole survivor, Mia, walking away from her unaware that the book she found has survived the slaughter and burning of the cabin. Since that movie is set in 2013 and ‘Ash vs Evil Dead’ is supposed to be later, it helps to assume that they are different copies to explain how Ash still has the Necronomicon in his possession in the series.
AND in ‘Infernal Possession: The Awakening’the Necronomicon and vinyl recordings of its passages dating from 1923 are in an old bank vault, presumably having been buried there for decades, and the book also looks different (check out those fangs) from previous versions.
“Everything is done and drawn by hand. It has a different visual style than what has been seen before internally,” said the director. Lee Cronin to ‘Empire’. “Even I have added small touches of Celtic influences and different things to give it a lot of personality“.

Cronin also touched on how his version of the Necronomicon could relate to previous editions.
“It’s the bastard cousin of the other books, and they are the bastard cousin of this one,” he said. “In one of the first meetings I had with Sam Raimi, I told him: ‘Do you know that in ‘The Army of Darkness’ there are three Necronomicons? You had one, Fede Álvarez, director of ‘Posesión infernal 2013, had one, and I’m going to take the other'”.

the chainsaw
Fans of ‘Terrifyingly Dead’ will remember that Ash gets a rather novel accessory during his fight against the deadites in the cabin in the woods.
Attacked by his possessed girlfriend Linda, he kills her and decapitates her with a shovel, but when he resurrects he finds a chainsaw in the shed and attacks him with it. As he defeats her, he discovers that her hand is possessed where Linda bit him, and ends up cutting off her appendix with the chainsaw.
Before the end of the movie, Ash has attached the chainsaw to the stump of his arm, which he finds very useful in ‘Army of Darkness’ when he has to deal with an entire army of the dead.

Bruce Campbell (as Ash) with a chainsaw instead of a hand has become an iconic image of ‘Hell’s Possession’and the limb-severing weapon appears in the climax of the 2013 remake (where Mia used it on a creature known as The Abomination) and also makes an appearance in ‘Hell’s Possession: Awakening’ by twist.
The heroine Beth not only uses a chainsaw in one of the bloodiest scenes in the film, but also the chainsaw itself is a callback to another memorable object from the previous films: Ash’s Oldsmobile Delta caras Cronin explained in an interview with ‘Digital Spy’.
“I planted the idea of that chainsaw very subtly, very early in the movie,” he explained. “the chainsaw in a movie ‘Infernal Possession’ It’s usually red, but I changed the color and it’s the exact color of the Oldsmobile Delta.”

‘Infernal Possession: Awakening’ -easter eggs
There are many other moments that director Lee Cronin has included in the film that are reminiscent of the previous ‘Possession from Hell’ movies.
There is a shotgun similar to Ash’s boomstick in ‘Hell’s Possession’ and ‘Army of Darkness’and a scene where Ellie gets stuck in an elevatorwith the wires coiling around his arms and legs, which reminiscent of the infamous tree scene and the lianas of the original by Raimi and the remake by Fede Álvarez.
Fans of ‘Terrifyingly Dead’ will identify a tribute featuring a flying eyeballAnd if you keep your eyes open you might see a pizza box from Henrietta’s Pizzaa nod to Henrietta, Archaeologist Knowby’s wife, whom he killed and buried in the basement, who would appear later when Ash is in the cabin.
What about if He camera closeup over a lake (near a cabin in the woods) is not enough to realize that ‘Hell’s Possession: Awakening’ is a worthy successor to the previous movies, check out what kassie doesEllie’s daughter, with her doll, Staffanie.
Yeah, decapitates to poor Staffanie in a very similar way to how Ash dispatches the poor demonic Beautiful in ‘Terrifyingly dead’.
