‘Succession’ teaches us to make a “Scooby Doo”, the business technique that the brilliant HBO series lacked

The curious plan with which Kendall and Roman intend to deceive Matsson in the new chapter of ‘Succession’: “Are you making me a Scooby Doo?”

The Roys have taught us that the world is much smaller when private transportation is available, that work and personal relationships can be murkier than you can imagine, and that ‘Saturn Devouring His Son’ has fallen short, but for those who need something more, ‘Succession’ now teaches us to make a “Scooby Doo”, the business technique that the brilliant HBO Max series lacked.

Before talking about this stratagem that would ruffle the ectoplasm of Adam Smith himself, we remember that what follows includes spoilers the size of a gigantic media conglomerate. If you do not go for the 4×05, do not continue reading.

    ‘Succession’ 4×05: The black list

The chapter begins with a new Kendall (another one), now co-CEO of Waystar with Roman. After trying to hide his continuing panic at Logan’s office, Karl and Gerri go over the plan to sell the company to GoJo, deal that now hinges on a trip everyone must take to the annual corporate retreat in Norway.

With $144 per share as the absolute minimum, the entire Waystar team arrives in the Scandinavian mountains to find a Matsson that anticipates two surprises: will pay $187 per share but wants to keep ATN, a brand that had been severed from the deal at Logan’s request.

Shiv (and the dinos) take this as good news, but Kendall and Roman know it’s an insult to their father and themselves, who think the Swede only wants the ATN for its sentimental value to them.

The brothers try again to obtain a figure for the sale without including ATN, but Matsson does not give in and begins to point to the Roys as the only cause of the delay in the negotiation. that’s when Kendall, the character who has been at the top and bottom the most times during the course of the series, plans a new coup.

An exhausted Roman wants to sell, but Kendall, unable to learn that there is always a bigger fish than him, convinces him to sabotage the deal. His brother doesn’t quite see it clearly, but a possible future as authentic directors of Waystar after destroying Matsson’s plans flashes through his mind for a secondenough for it to give in.

Without informing Shiv, agree to manipulate Matsson into backing down himself, since if any of the Roys decided to personally stop the sale, it would jeopardize their leadership before the council. The machine begins by tasking Greg with a press leak about how shady the Waystar and GoJo deal has become.

In the final meeting, Kendall and Roman are nice to Matsson and determined to reach an agreement, but with the finesse of a businessman who has lost touch with reality, they warn him of a certain scandal that flies over the ATN before buying it.

“Don’t make me a Scooby Doo”Matsson immediately replies, overtaking the brothers in a second, demonstrating with this term that he knows what they are playing: announce that the house is haunted to potential buyers so they will back out themselves.

    And the ghost was actually…

Matsson has caught them the first time, underlining (explicitly) the incompetence of the brothers before the capacities with which Logan ran the business. It is that moment in which Roman cannot take it anymore and charges against a Matsson who did not hesitate to call them into retirement just a few days after the death of his father.

Enraged, he assures Matsson that he will never take over his company and, although he later tries to cast doubt on whether everything he has told him was really a ploy to earn a few more dollars, the Swede already knows that he has won. He knows the boys won’t be able to ignore a succulent counter offer if he goes through the council. $192 per share, a win that is the biggest of his losses.

It is impossible to understand it otherwise, we are facing one of the best series in history.
