Meryl Streep is the winner of the Princesa Asturias de las Artes award


The 73-year-old actress was singled out for ‘ennobling the art of acting’

American actress Meryl Streep is the winner of Princess of Asturias Art Award to “dignify the art of acting”, announced this Wednesday 26, the jury of one of the most important awards in the Ibero-American area.

“With his talent and his rigor he has allowed different generations to enjoy unforgettable shows, earning the respect that this great art deserves”, reads the jury report on the 73-year-old performer, winner of three oscars, For Kramer vs. Kramer, Sophie’s Choice AND The Iron Lady.

The €50,000 ($55,000) prize is one of eight covering the arts, communications, science and other areas that are awarded each year by the foundation named after Spain’s Crown Princess Leonor.

Flamenco music artists Carmen Linares AND Maria Pages won the art award last year. Among other past winners is the English director Peter Brook and American directors Martin Scorsese AND Francis Ford Coppola.

The awards are among the most prestigious in the Spanish-speaking world. The awards ceremony takes place every October in the city of Oviedo in northern Spain.
