On Wednesday, March 26, 2023, TF1 offers its viewers to tune in to the start of the 19th season of Grey’s Anatomy from 9:10 pm. In this case, AlloCiné was able to speak with Chandra Wilson, Bailey’s interpreter from the very first episode of the Shonda Rhimes-created show. With us, the actor imagines the continuation of the intrigues associated with his character and recalls his journey through the iconic American fiction…
AlloCiné: How is Bailey at the beginning of this 19th season of “Grey’s Anatomy”?
Chandra Wilson: After coming out of the pandemic, everyone had to make a choice for their own life: determine what is important, what should be left out, determine where their priorities are. Bailey is also there at the end of season 18, so she decided to put family first for once! Everyone needs to rest to see more clearly. Therefore, Bailey is full of renewed energy and feels positive about the future. Sometimes the only way to get there is to stop everything…
What do you thinkAlexis Floyd, Harry Schum Jr., Adelaide Kane, Midori Francis and Nico Terho Who is playing the new interns?
They are fantastic! Over the years, we have had the opportunity several times to put together a new promotion for interns. The characters are different in each generation, but the context is the same: they’re young, they’re entering a surgical training program, they’re competitive, they want to know who will be the first to get the chance to operate… No change in season 19, it’s pure Grey’s Anatomy! What changes for the public is figuring out who will be their favorite among the new ones. Who will we support? Who is closest to you and who do you love least? This is the fun part for the audience!
Your character has a privileged place in “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Station 19do you appreciate it
Yes! Station 19 gives Bailey and Ben a chance to show a little more of what’s going on in the house. Both shows focus on them in their work environment, but then there are those family moments, those personal moments where they actually talk about what’s going on and how they feel differently. . Our characters continue to be multi-dimensional, not just people at work.
Your character lives with OCD, he’s also had a heart attack and quit his job to keep his sanity… Why do you think it’s necessary to play these problems that people go through on a daily basis?
This is really very important. Fans watch our series to escape their daily lives or to find information. If someone finds themselves watching our characters go through something they’re going through or someone close to them is going through, they’ll remember later: ‘You know what ? I watched Grey’s Anatomy and this is what Bailey went through! In these moments, you know that you helped others (laughs). That’s why it’s important that Bailey has OCD in more than one episode and we see her develop with that situation. I’m glad I wasn’t cornered.
Have you read testimonials or met people with the same problems as Bailey?
Both! (Laughs) And as I continue to talk to people and do research, I’m fascinated to see an increase in mental health issues. If they are not identified or intervened, with medication or talk, we sometimes fail to manage them properly…
“Grey’s Anatomy” has had several storylines related to the Black Lives Matters movement. These scenes were powerful and heavy, but necessary. As an actress and as a black woman, did you find it difficult to interpret?
Once again, with the pandemic, the world has found compassion! (Laughs) The international response to our national problem after the death of George Floyd has been incredible. At Grey’s, we just tell a story and our audience gets what they want from it. Our plots with a social component do not tell us what and how to think. We report what is happening around us. Maybe you didn’t know, maybe someone already knew exactly what it was… but it’s still important to us to show things as they are and let people decide what kind of people they want to be from there.
What do you think of the decision?Ellen Pompeo Leaving the series?
Ellen Pompeo and all the actors who have come and gone from Grey’s Anatomy live on forever through their characters on the show. 19 seasons is a long time to stay in one place! Either way, the door never closes and if anyone wants to come back and hug us, they can! (Laughs) But it’s a natural progression for a doctor, surgeon or researcher. It moves from one place to another… and we continue to tell our stories with authenticity.
