Productions with diverse and representative casts have always been a request from Netflix users. Despite advances in casting more women and black actors in major roles, there is still a lack of diversity behind the camera — in TV show and film production. That’s what a new report from the USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative, commissioned by the streaming company, shows.
More opportunities on Netflix
After the murder of George Floyd in the United States in 2020, Netflix and other companies pledged to invest efforts in inclusion initiatives and expand opportunities for people of color.
Famous Creators Shonda Rhimes (Gray’s anatomy, How to get away with murder) and Tyler Perry (Sisters, A family funeral) reiterated that creating more training opportunities for underrepresented individuals and communities who want to work in film and television production is essential to diverse teams. The debate took place this week during a virtual conference on Netflix’s quarterly report.
Additionally, as revealed in the filing, Netflix has begun delivering on its promise in 2021: The company has invested 30% of its stipulated $100 million to bring diversity behind the cameras over five years. One such production was The ladderby Shonda Rhimes.
