Martin Scorsese reveals the biggest difficulty of filming his latest film with Leonardo DiCaprio: “I’m from New York. There were prairies and coyotes”

Martin Scorsese has spoken about his latest film, ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’, together with one of its protagonists, Leonardo DiCaprioat CinemaCon held in Las Vegas the past few days.

The film will be presented at the next edition of the Cannes Film Festival, which will take place during the month of May. After this, it will hit theaters in October 2023. ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’ is a period drama about murders that took place in the early 1920s, after major oil deposits were discovered in the lands of a Native American population.

“We’ve tried to do the right thing” commented the director, in his talk with the interpreter. “We shot on the actual scene, including the doctor’s office.”

However, for the veteran filmmaker (who is comfortably based in Manhattan) shooting in a rural setting such as Oklahoma seems to have had its difficulties. (At least, that’s how he joked with DiCaprio, during his talk).

“It has not been an easy film to make…” he said with a humorous tone. “I’m a New Yorker, and there were prairies there. There were wild horses and coyotes…“

During the 30 minute conversation, DiCaprio interviewed his director about the influences that had inspired him when creating his cinema; as well as his preferences when it comes to consuming movies (whether in the rooms or at home). On the first, ‘Citizen Kane’ emerged as a fundamental pillar in his imagination, and on the second, the big screen lost on the individual experience (“at home, you can take walks in the meantime”).

In addition, Scorsese confessed that the script for ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’ had continued to undergo a process of rewriting and revision until the last day of shooting.

The film reunites in its cast DiCaprio with Robert De Niro, Jesse Plemons, Brendan Fraser, John Lithgow and Lily Gladstone. In it, the work of a newly created FBI will be followed in its search for the person responsible for the brutal murders.

“This is a big screen movie, that’s how we conceived it,” Scorsese commented at the Paramount presentation. The director promised a story of “epic dimensions.“

The director and De Niro meet again after other great titles of his cinematography such as ‘Taxi Driver’ or ‘The Irishman’. For his part, DiCaprio also repeats with Scorsese after having starred in numerous titles alongside him, such as: ‘Shutter Island’ or ‘The Wolf of Wall Street’.

‘Killers of the Flower Moon’ has become one of the most anticipated films of 2023and shares a list with films such as ‘Barbie’, ‘Indiana Jones 5’ or ‘The Little Mermaid’.
