Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 thrills from beginning to end and hits the drama and comedy [REVIEW]

Directed by James Gunn, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 comes to redeem Marvel Studios after a string of bad movies and series in recent years

After much waiting, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 finally hits Brazilian theaters next Thursday, May 4, with a plot filled with emotion and great success in drama and comedy (learn more below, in this review without spoilers).

In the space of six years between the second and third film in the franchise, the end of the trilogy faced some obstacles during production: in addition to the pandemic of Covid-19director and screenwriter, James Gunnwas fired after controversial tweets were rescued.

The dismissal took place in 2018 and, until he was rehired by disney It is marvel studiosthe filmmaker went to work for the competitor, A.Dand released the great The Suicide Squad (2021) and the acclaimed series Peacemakerfrom the HBO Max. Now, Gunn is the boss of dc studios beside Peter Safran.

After an appeal by the interpreters of the Guardians of the Galaxyas Chris Pratt (Peter Quill/star lord), Zoë Saldaña (Gamora), dave bautista (Drax) It is Bradley Cooper (Rocket Raccoon), the filmmaker returned to the post. I’m glad that happened, because James Gunn delivered one of the best films of his career and finally brought a good production after several bad films and series from marvel studios in the last years.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is full of character and takes everything introduced in the later films of the franchise even further, as well as events from Avengers: Infinity War (2018) and Avengers: Endgame (2019). Right at the opening, with a soundtrack of the acoustic version of “Creep,” hit do radioheadyou already receive a beating and it’s already emotional.

The emotional side is very strong in the film: Peter Quill is devastated by the death of Gamora in infinity war and even more so with the return of the character with no memories, we discover more about the devastating past of rocket (high point of Vol. 3) It is mantis (Pom Klementieff) want to discover yourself even more.

As promotional materials have already revealed, the feature introduces the long-awaited Adam Warlockplayed by Will Poulterwho received preparation to appear in the MCU since the first guardians. With a very strong opening scene, the character drops in performance throughout the film, and is only used as a tool for the narrative to work in a more simplified way, without going into his motivations.

However, the pace of the narrative is quite satisfactory and does not tire at any time. One of the main criticisms of the scripts of James Gunn (and gives Marvel overall) points out some unnecessary and unfunny jokes. At the Vol. 3, the filmmaker nailed the comedic moments, even when they happen after dramatic scenes. Every decision is made naturally.

Gunn created a very unpredictable script, you get the feeling that each member of the Guardians of the Galaxy can die at any moment. Now, the main focus of the film is Rocket Raccoonone of the most charismatic MCU. The plot is sewn with flashbacks about his origin and, even when he is not on the scene, the character’s presence remains very strong.

this past of rocket dialogues directly with the great villain of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3O High Evolutionarylived brilliantly by Chukwudi Iwuji (one of the highlights of Peacemaker, including). The character is very powerful and inherently evil – not like a Thanos who destroyed the universe for a reason aimed at the good of others. Even so, in the end, he doesn’t live up to all the expectations created in relation to his powers, but without a doubt he is one of the most memorable antagonists in the game. MCU.

With a strong first half, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 runs too much with the narrative and makes for some very rushed decisions, especially to allow time to wrap up each character’s arc on the team. However, if you had a few more minutes, you could deliver more than Adam Warlock and bring outcomes more calmly and naturally, for example.

Another very interesting point is the setting. This is one of the most beautiful movies ever Marvelbe it for scenery, costumes and designs of creatures and characters – the new uniform of guardians it’s flawless. Especially for the creatures, Gunn borrows heavily from horror movies (with some terrifying and frightening scenes) and also pays homage to classics like 2001 – A Space Odyssey (1968) and Alien – The 8th Passenger (1979).

With the movies and series of superheroes quite saturated and criticized, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 comes as a beautiful breath and shows that the genre has a lot of potential beyond the bad jokes and excessive use of computer graphics. Exciting from beginning to end, this film is one of the great landmarks of the genre.
