This Saturday morning, FIBA drew the groups for the Basketball World Cup, which will take place from August 25 to September 10 in Manila, Philippines, Olinawa, Japan and Jakarta, Indonesia. The event defined Brazil in Group G, alongside Spain, the competition’s current champions.
In addition to the Spaniards, the Brazilian team faces Iran and Ivory Coast in the first stage. Whoever advances crosses over with the nations of group H, which are: France – currently second Olympic -, Canada, Latvia and Lebanon.
“Our group is very strong, with Spain, the reigning champions, and two countries with growing basketball, Ivory Coast and Iran. Furthermore, in a hypothetical second stage, we have the group with Latvia, Lebanon, Canada and France. First, the focus is on the first stage, where we have to focus and work to move on to the next stage. Think about one thing at a time. But we don’t have to choose. We are in a World Cup. Only the best teams in the world” said coach Gustavo De Conti.

Brazil is looking for a place in the 2024 Olympics
Besides trying to win their third world championship – won in 1959 and 1963 – Brazil is still trying to qualify for the 2024 Olympic Games, in Paris (FRA). To secure a berth through the World Cup, the country must have at least the second-best campaign in the Americas in the tournament. However, the continent has six other competing representatives: the United States, Canada, Mexico, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic and Venezuela.
On the other hand, Spain is also struggling to secure the Olympics through the World Cup which also has two berths for Europe. The current leader of the rankings was world champion in 2006 and 2019, the last edition of the tournament. Brazil is 13th in the standings.
Countries have been divided into pots according to the latest world ranking. Thus, Brazil were in Pot 3, alongside Germany, Greece and Italy. Furthermore, the draw did not allow two nations from one continent to be in the same group, with the exception of Europe, where it was possible to have two representatives in each group.
By format, the two best teams in each group advance to the second phase, bringing the results obtained in the initial phase and crossing over with two other qualifiers from another group. At the end of the second stage, two teams advance to the quarter-finals.
