Team Mundo overtook Team Europe and won the title of the Lopes Cup on Sunday evening, played during Follow The Beach Copacabana, the largest tournament in the world, played on Copacabana beach and broadcast by Sportv 3. The competition counts 2,000 subscribers from twelve countries.
Team Mundo trailed losing their first two games. The first in mixed doubles with the Spanish Antomi Ramos, number 1 in the world, and Flaminia Daina, seventh classified, beating the Brazilians João Wiesinger, 21st, and Sophia Chow, 8th in the classification, by 6/3 7/5. In the second match, great excitement on the pitch with the Italians Giulia Gasparri and Ninny Valentini who won 6/2 2/6 11/9 over the Brazilian Rafaella Miiller and the Venezuelan Patrícia Diaz, third best couple on the circuit. The last match carried the most weight in the overall score and Team Europe had to score six matches in the last match of the men’s doubles with Michelle Cappelletti, best in the world, together with Nicolas Gianotti, 3rd. But André Baran, in 4th place, and Nikita Burmakin, 6th and former leader, came with everything and capitalized on the year’s confidence with two major titles. Baran, two times world champion with the Brazilian shirt, underlined the practically perfect game: “We always hope to win, the score was a bit elastic, but it was a tough match, many 40 draws. But mostly because it was a rival duo that we had never played together, today at a high level it makes the difference, Nikita and I are more in tune”.
Nikita Burmakin described: “The feeling is incredible. Difficult conditions because we arrived today. We weren’t adapted to the sand, the sun, the humidity, the ball. But we played with passion, with heart. I’m so happy that we had such a good result and managed to win.” such a beautiful match. The competition will conclude this Monday with singles duels with the women’s final scheduled at 19:00 and the men’s final at 20:00 on the center court with the broadcast of Sportv 3. Each champion will take home R$ 60,000.
The big names in sport are in the quarterfinals which start at 10 with the great confrontation between Rafaella Miiller against Ninny Valentini, Nicole Nobile against Giulia Gasparri, Patricia Diaz x Sophia Chow and Flaminia Daina x Sofia Cimatti. Not before 11, André Baran faces the Italian legend Luca Cramarossa, Antomi Ramos faces Tomaso Giovannini, Nicolas Gianotti challenges the Italian Doriano Beccaccioli and Nikita Burmakin duels against Cappelletti. The Women’s Semi-Finals start at 2.00pm and the Men’s Semi-Finals start at 4.00pm.
