In this adaptation of Adrian Lyne’s film, actor Joshua Jackson (Dawson, Fringe) plays Dan Gallagher, a role previously played by Michael Douglas. He answers to Lizzie Kaplan (Cloverfield, Castle Rock), who has the tough task of replacing Glenn Close in the role of the excellent Alex Forrest. Finally, Amanda Peet (2012, Dirty John) plays Bette, Danny’s companion, a character previously portrayed by Anne Archer.

During the eighties, Hollywood was hit by a wave of erotic thrillers – also called psychosexual thrillers. Highly acclaimed by the public at the time, these works depict femme fatales, male characters enthralled and threatened, all intertwined in fiery plots full of suspense.
One of the great masters of this trend is none other thanAdrian Lyne which completed 9 ½ weeks in 1986. The drama, which starred Mickey Rourke and Kim Basinger, popularized the genre — and Joe Cocker strippers at the same time. A year later came Liaison fatale, a radically different film, still by Line, about the revenge of a woman, brilliantly played by Glenn Close, against a married man, played by Michael Douglas.

The feature film becomes a real social phenomenon, to the extent that it prevents many men and women from engaging in extramarital affairs. Thirty-six years later, times have changed. The balance of power between the two sexes is no longer the same, and Alex Forrest’s character even has his defenders – something incredible at the release of the film.
Divided into eight episodes, the series retelling promises a different, more modern and feminist approach. Is this really true? Not easily. this fatal link It deviates sharply from the original by choosing new narrative parts. The audience finds Dan Gallagher accused of murder. interesting. The story then goes back in time to understand the sequence of events.

The first two episodes focus on the orderly daily life of this lawyer and his encounter with a mysterious young woman. The time seems a little long, but we will have to wait for the third episode to know the will of this series.
The whole meeting is now told from another point of view, by Alex Forrest. An opportunity for the public to discover his dark and tortured soul. This new antagonist is just as terrifying as the one from 1987, if not more so. Lizzie Kaplan Never trying to imitate Glenn Close’s iconic interpretation. Some of the lines are similar to the raucous fans of the film, but the actor makes the character his own.

The serial format allows for a more in-depth analysis of this obsessive woman, but the differences with the feature film are not numerous. Alex Forrest is still cast and written as the villain of the story, perhaps with rather subtle nuances.
Liaison fatale is a good series that should definitely appeal to fans of the genre, but it’s a shame that it didn’t quite live up to its promise.
