Recent years Netflix It has become one of the most popular streaming services thanks to its extensive catalog and original productions that delight audiences, but in mid-April, it gave something to talk about after a lawsuit was filed by a man who is apparently having a hard time after the premiere of a documentary.
Man takes legal action against Netflix after they used a photo of him
It all happened when the company released the documentary about serial killers “The Hatchet Wielding Hitchhiker,” which tells the story of Caleb Lawrance McGillvary, a young man who went from Internet celebrity to prison for committing a homicide in 2013.
There Taylor Hazlewood, a resident of the city of Kentucky in the United States, was enraged, because when he saw the material in question, he realized that he was being shown a photo without his consent.
In various interviews with local media, he explained that Netflix shows him in a “weak and slanderous light” and has damaged his reputation by using his photo, as he has no criminal record or relationship with the documentary’s protagonist.
So he decided to take legal action and sue the company for a million dollars after they appropriated one of his Instagram images of himself posing with an ax as a tribute to his favorite children’s book, Hatchet by Gary Paulsen.
The news was trending and netizens were on the young man’s side as they believe Netflix was wrong to take his picture and even advised him to ask for more money for the damages caused by the premiere of the documentary.
For its part, Netflix has not commented, which could be a sign that the company wants to get this case off the cameras and reach a financial settlement without attracting attention.
The situation made it clear that streaming is not that careful when it comes to choosing material, teaching everyone a great copyright lesson.
