Marvel: We Thought She Was Dead… Why Is Gamora Still Alive in Guardians of the Galaxy 3?

Guardians of the Galaxy 3 hits our screens this Wednesday, May 3, and is billed as the final installment in James Gunn’s Marvel trilogy. Of course, the ending, which means that certain characters may die (most notably Drax, Nebula, and/or Rocket, if we’re going by the reveal images). And at that time the dead will return.

This is indeed Gamora, still played by Zoe Saldana, recently seen in Avatar 2. The adopted daughter of Thanos, although the latter sacrificed her in Avengers: Infinity War so that she could return the “Soul Stone to the planet Vormir”. How can he be alive?

If it’s not really that simple, like in all Temporal Paradox stories, the answer is Avengers: Endgame. And it addresses the concept of time travel and multiverse at the heart of the Russo brothers’ film. Unlike Back to the Future, where every action in the past has direct consequences for the future, the actions of Marvel’s heroes lead to an alternate reality.

To find the Power Stone, War Machine (Don Cheadle) and Nebula (Karen Gillan) travel back in time to 2014, the year Guardians of the Galaxy premieres. When Gamora was still very much alive before she met Star-Lord (Chris Pratt) and the others.

Let’s leave out the details that could complicate things, but remember that this action will, among other things, involve a collision between the past and present of the story, when the Thanos of 2014 uses the hero machine to land in 2023. own. Including his two adopted daughters: Gamora and another version of Nebula, who will die in the final battle.

Meanwhile, Gamora goes on the run after her adoptive father fails, much to Star-Lord’s annoyance. And one of the challenges of Guardians of the Galaxy 3 will be finding him for a good team. Knowing that this is not a dead young woman brought back to life as a victim of Thanos snapping her fingers, but an alternate version who has yet to meet her future partners when she arrives in 2023.

From the first trailer released in December, the image showed him in the company of Drax, Mantis (Pom Klementieff) and Star-Lord. So the question isn’t so much whether he’ll find the heroes, but how the reunion will go. And if his connections with the characters will be different than in the previous two opus. Good news: the answer is close at hand.
