Faster than Corinthians, Luxa won the last title in the derby

Coach Vanderlei Luxemburgo, announced by Corinthians last Monday, has a shorter streak than Timão. Interestingly, the last result of the coach was against the Alvinegra team, when he coached rival Palmeiras, in the decider of the Paulista Championship 2020.

Luxa took over Palmeiras at the beginning of 2020 and led the team to a state decider against Corinthians, at the time commanded by Tiago Nunes. In the first match of the final, the teams drew 0-0 at the Neo Química Arena, in a bureaucratic confrontation with little chance to score.

The return to Allianz Parque, on the other hand, was quite eventful. Palmeiras opened the scoring through Luiz Adriano, early in the second leg, and looked to be aiming for the title in regular time. However, in extra time of the match, Jô was brought down in the box and the penalty was signaled. The striker himself converted the kick and Derby were taken to penalties.

In the maximum penalties, Verdão won by 4 to 3 and became champions of São Paulo for the 23rd time in its history. Despite the symbolic result, Luxemburgo was dismissed in October of that year after an up-and-down season in the Brazilian league. Luxa was the last Alviverde manager before the arrival of Abel Ferreira.

Following his move to Palmeiras, Luxemburgo took over Vasco again at the start of 2021 and also took charge of Cruzeiro in the same year. The coach has not worked on the sidelines in 2022.

If Luxa’s last title was in 2020, Corinthians were crowned champions for the last time in 2019, also in the Paulista Championship. On that occasion, Timão beat rivals São Paulo after drawing 0-0 at Morumbi and winning 2-1 at the Neo Química Arena.

In his third spell at Corinthians, Luxa will make his debut this Tuesday, against Independiente del Valle. The ball rolls into the Neo Química Arena at 21:00 (Brasilia time) and is valid for the third round of the group stage of the Copa Libertadores.
