The initiative was mentioned by the Pope on his return from Hungary
Russia said on Tuesday it was unaware of the existence of a Vatican “peace mission” to try to resolve the conflict with Ukraine.
The initiative was recalled by Pope Francis himself during the return flight from Hungary last Sunday (30).
“I am willing to do whatever is necessary. A mission is now underway. It is not public for now, but I will talk about it when it is”, the pontiff said at the time.
However, in a statement on Tuesday, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov assured that Moscow “does not know” about this alleged Vatican mission.
Last Monday (1st), an official from the office of the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, also told CNN that he was unaware of this initiative.
The Vatican has offered on several occasions to mediate in the conflict between Moscow and Kiev, while the Pope has shown himself willing to visit the two capitals, but so far without success.
