The word “Watergate” will forever be associated with the downfall of Richard Nixon. And yet, while everyone knows the reasons that led to the resignation of America’s 37th president, many are largely unaware of the outbreak of one of the greatest political scandals of the 20th century.
Thus, the bet of the new HBO series White House Plumbers is twofold. You follow a famous wiretapping case step by step, while taking the dramatic aspect of the story by staging useless secret agents, manipulated by a plot that is beyond them. In this series, there are no James Bond spies, but a team of no-nonsense people who entered world history against their will!
The main character, Howard Hunt, an equally prolific CIA agent who writes thrillers under various pseudonyms, is played by Woody Harrelson. Note that someone who might be Matthew McConaughey’s biological half-brother succeeds Ed Harris in the role he camped in Oliver Stone’s Nixon.
The rest of the cast, namely Justin Theroux, in the skin of the German spy, Gordon Lee, fascinated by the Fuhrer’s speeches, Lena Head and Judy Greer will portray the wives of the two main actors, and finally. Kathleen Turner and Domhnall Gleeson portray supporting characters in the program.
While the series will help you learn a little about Watergate, this new HBO production shouldn’t be taken as a history lesson on American politics in the 70s. Thus, it is more appropriate to watch this series as a satirical farce inspired by real events. rather than a humorous historical biopic.
The White House Plumbers is adapted from the book wholeness by Alex Gregory and Peter Hayek; This writing tandem notably worked on several episodes of Veep, the HBO political series featuring fictional characters, although some were inspired by real politicians.
