According to research commissioned by Microsoft, 92% of medium and small businesses are in the process of digital transformation. And 98% of them recognize the positive impact of technology on business. According to an expert, when investing in process automation, companies can check what can be more profitable: buy ready-made software or develop their own system
One research conducted by Edelman for Microsoft on the digitization of micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) showed that 92% of them say they are in the process of digital transformation. Of this total, 98% of companies recognize the positive business impact of implementing technology. The data was collected from 312 leaders and decision makers in different sectors of the economy during the period of 14 and 15 November 2022.
Among destinations for investing in and deploying digital technologies, respondents cited the prioritized use of data for business intelligence (cited by 47% of respondents), recruiting and training technology talent (41% ) and the focus on the acquisition and adoption of digital technologies new technologies (40%).
Another result shown by the survey, conducted since 2020, indicates that technology makes employee recruitment more efficient. This statement was made by 86% of respondents, who said that technology offers more diversity and quality in the recruiting and hiring processes.
With 10 years of experience in the Information Technology area, the software developer Gabriel Bartholo Batista confirms that the adoption of technologies, especially to automate processes in the company, can bring various advantages for the business. He cites cost reduction, increased efficiency, improved product or service quality, and greater agility in decision-making as some of these benefits.
The professional comments that during the process of adopting technologies into the business routine, it is common for questions to arise about what to prioritize when adopting automation software, for example. One of the main questions is about hiring ready-made software or developing your own system.
In the case of the first option, the main advantage, according to Batista, is the speed of implementation, as the development process is already completed and the software is ready for use. “Also, the upfront cost may be less than developing your own software, as the company won’t need to invest in a specialized programming and development team,” he clarifies.
Despite this, even choosing to develop your own software can be advantageous, especially in the long run, as you have the possibility to customize the system according to the needs of the company. “In this case, the company will have total control over the software and can adapt it when necessary. However, the development process may take longer and the cost may be higher,” he reflects.
To decide the best option, Gabriel Batista recommends analyzing your company’s needs and resources. “It’s important to weigh the pros and cons of each option and choose the one that best meets the needs of the business and is cost-effective,” he sums up.
The digital transformation of companies has been accelerated by the Covid-19 pandemic
The health emergency caused by the Covid-19 pandemic has accelerated the digital transformation process of companies. The research by Edelman and Microsoft collects data from 2020, the first year of the pandemic. According to the authors of the survey, in first edition of the survey, carried out in 2020 and published in 2021the data already indicated a trend towards continued adoption of technologies.
In this edition of the survey, 82% of Brazilian MSMEs said they wanted to pursue digitization through new tools. According to the findings, MSMEs’ top investment initially was in communication and collaboration platforms, with 66% of respondents emphasizing that video calling software would be the top change in technology adoption, followed by the cloud and from remote work, both with 55%. Already in 2022, 51% of MSMEs said they would invest in video calling solutions.
The second edition of the survey, conducted in late 2021 and published last year, demonstrated that MSMEs were in an accelerated digitization process. In the comparison between 2021 and 2022, the data shows that many companies have managed to solve the initial infrastructure challenges, such as internet connection, software and hardware. While 47% of businesses said they experienced connectivity issues in the early years of the pandemic, the recently released third edition of the survey shows that only 29% identified this issue as a problem.
