Based on ‘Raging Bull: My Story’, the book by boxer Jake LaMotta, ‘Raging Bull’ tells the biographical story of the famous athlete. After the urban fury of ‘Taxi Driver’ (1976), Scorsese wanted to experiment with the kinder side of Hollywood and, paradoxically, ‘New York, New York’ (1977) only caused him headaches. It was then that, fearing that the industry, cocaine, or both could end his career at any moment, turned to Paul Schrader again to write a script full of punches in and out of the ring.

In ‘Raging Bull,’ we meet Jake la Motta and his brother Joey, a boxer-manager duo who make Rocky and his brother-in-law look like kid versions in this tough biopic about the grueling climb (and dizzying fall) of a violent man who somehow managed to escape from the bottom.

The title earned 8 nominations at the 1980 Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Director for Scorsese, among which won the Best Actor statuette for Robert De Niro and the already mentioned Best Editing award for Thelma Scoonmaker.

That same year, got 7 nominations at the Golden Globes, among which De Niro was also the winner for Best Actor. At the BAFTA Awards, Joe Pesci won for Best New Actor and Schoonmaker for Best Editing. The film’s cast also emerged victorious at the New York Critics Circle awards -with the Best Actor award for De Niro and Best Supporting Actor for Pesci- and at the Los Angeles Critics Association awards, where, in addition De Niro’s “Raging Bull” won Best Picture.

The movie will return to theaters two weeks after the premiere in Cannes 2023 of ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’Scorsese’s latest film and a new collaboration with his fetish actor, Robert De Niro.
