Manchester City forward Erling Haaland scored his 35th Premier League goal of the season to secure a 3-0 victory over West Ham United, a result which returned his side to the top of the table on Wednesday.
The Norwegian killed stubborn resistance from West Ham with a delicate finish on goal in the 25th minute, breaking the single-season goalscoring record in English football.
City, who started the night in second place following Arsenal’s victory over Chelsea on Tuesday, were twice stopped by the crossbar and hampered by relegation-risk West Ham in the first half.
But Nathan Ake opened the scoring five minutes after the break with a free-kick header.
Haaland then eased tensions at the Etihad Stadium when he latched on to a pass from Jack Grealish to beat Lukasz Fabianski and surpass the 34-goal mark he shared with Andy Cole and Alan Shearer with five games to play.
With the points secured, substitute Phil Foden made it 3-0 with a spectacular volley in the 40th minute.
City, chasing a fifth title in six seasons under Pep Guardiola, have 79 points from 33 games and Arsenal have 78 and one game to spare. Guardiola’s side can open up a four-point lead if they beat Leeds United at home on Saturday.
