She hid Anne Frank during the war: the incredible true story of Miep Ghiz that inspired the series Ray of Hope

You certainly know the story of Anne Frank, but you know less about the story of Miep Gies. However, if you can read it Diary of Anne FrankThanks to Miep Gies, a true World War II heroine. Today, a mini-series is dedicated to him. Available on Disney+, Glimpse of Hope retraces its incredible story.

This Dutch woman was an assistant to Otto Frank, Anne Frank’s father, at his company OPEKTA in Amsterdam. Close to the family, Miep Gies did not hesitate to help her hide from the Nazis in the company’s famous annex for two years, with the help of her husband Jan Gies and the Dutch resistance.

Despite his efforts, Mape Guise was unable to do anything when the Franks were exposed and then exiled. Meanwhile, the young man found and saved the writings of Anne Frank, which he then gave to Otto Frank, the only survivor of the family who returned from the concentration camps.

Thanks to this, Otto Frank published Anne Frank’s diary in 1947, which became a literary success and is still the main testimony of history. Mipp Guise and his wife Jan Guise have received numerous awards and medals for their achievements, including being recognized as Among the Righteous in 1977.

Mape even received the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in 1994. The following year, this character took part in the film Anne Frank Remembered, a documentary adaptation. Diary of Anne Frank Directed by John Blair, in association with Walt Disney Pictures, Anne Frank House and the BBC.

The documentary was first broadcast on television, and later had a theatrical release. Anna Frank Mechsend won the Oscar for Best Documentary, shared by John Blair and Mike Gies, who received a standing ovation.

Mike Geese died on January 11, 2010 at the age of 100. His ashes rest in a funeral home in the city of Horn in the Netherlands. The series Glimpse of Hope, created by Joan Rutter and Tony Phelan, focuses on the extraordinary journey of Miep Gies and can rely on a remarkable cast, namely Bel Pauli, Joe Cole, Liev Schreiber or even Amira Kassar.

The latter is Edith Frank, Anne Frank’s mother. During the sixth edition of the CANNESERIES festival, where a spark of hope was presented, Amira Kasar returned to us the incredible story of Miep Gies and the concept of the series available on Disney +.
