The Knights of the Zodiac: where to see the animated series

With Knights of the Zodiac live-action, many people may miss the animated series and want to see it again. Or, who knows, the film could be the gateway for those who don’t understand animation and arouse the curiosity to see the anime as well. Whatever your case, we have prepared a guide to make your life easier and avoid wasting time searching through streams.

Knights of the Zodiac, the classic series (1986-1989)

Anyone who was a kid in the early 90s most likely saw the cartoon Knights of the Zodiac. Although successful in Japan, Brazil and some European countries, the anime was canceled before it was finished. The explanation: The animated series caught up with the manga and its continuity was compromised, as the comics were late. Thus, the end of the series isn’t exactly the conclusion of the story. There are three seasons, with a total of 114 episodes. Available on Crunchyroll and the Microsoft Store.

The Hades Saga (2002-2008)

Saga is the final chapter of the original story of the Knights of the Zodiac.

More than a decade after the original animated series Knights of the Zodiac was canceled, the characters are back on TV. Therefore, fans might as well watch the definitive saga. Similarly to what happened in the classic animation, the new version also had setbacks due to the publication of the manga. After all, the author, Masami Kurumada, left the saga that started in the 90s on hiatus, only to continue the story during the 2000s, almost in parallel with the new anime. But eventually closure came. There are three seasons, with 31 episodes. Available on Crunchyroll.

Saint Seiya: Knights of the Zodiac (2020-)

The Knights of the Zodiac movie has similarities to the new cartoon

While considered by some to be a timeless classic, the original series can feel dated. So we had a remake with Saint Seiya: Knights of the Zodiac. Finally, in addition to updating the story and occasionally changing the plot, the new animation is in CGI. A change from the source material is the gender change of Shun, now female. In fact, computer animation is one of the inspirations for the recent live-action film. The first season of Saint Seiya was released exclusively on Netflix, while the series continues on Crunchyroll starting with the second season.

The Lost Canvas (2009-2011)

The Lost Canvas is not by the original author of Knights of the Zodiac

This is considered a non-canon story. After all, it’s not by the original author, Masami Kurumada. The anime is in fact inspired by the work of Shiori Teshirogi and the plot takes place well before the birth of Seiya and his companions: in 1743. It is therefore the oldest story of the entire saga. The focus here is on the 12 Golden Saints of the period and the Galactic War between Athena and Hades. The anime has two seasons, with 23 episodes, and is available on Prime Video, HBO Max, and Funimation.

Santa Sho (2018-2019)

Saintia Sho: spin-off of the Knights of the Zodiac

Although the protagonists of Saintia Sho do not appear in the classic animated series, the anime is set in the same time period. Knights of the Zodiac. Soon, Seiya and other characters end up showing up here as well. However, the stars here are different. The story accompanies the Saintia, a group of warriors of Athena. Specifically, I am the personal guard of the Goddess. However, unlike the Amazons that originally appear in Knights, Saintia does not wear masks. There are ten episodes, available on Crunchyroll.
