Florence hosts the conference on the future of the EU

The event brought together representatives from across the block

The city of Florence, Italy, hosted a conference that brought together representatives from across the European Union to discuss paths for the bloc’s future.

The president of the Eurocities association, Mayor Dario Nardella, took the opportunity to express his fear that populism will continue to grow in Europe.

“Europe seems distant from its citizens, and we have forgotten the vision that saw the birth of our community”, declared the Florentine sovereign this Friday (5), at the opening of the second day of the conference The State of the Union.

The event is in its 12th edition and is organized by the European University Institute, which this year proposed the title “Building Europe in times of uncertainty”, a clear allusion to the effects of the war in Ukraine.

“National government vetoes are causing disaffection, as well as the burden of the bureaucratic apparatus,” Nardella added. According to him, it is necessary to listen to the voice of cities and involve them in decision-making processes on crucial issues, such as energy.

The second day of the conference also saw the participation of former Italian Prime Minister and current European Commissioner for the Economy, Paolo Gentiloni, who defended the approval of a new regulatory framework for the bloc’s fiscal rules.

“There is a strong awareness among members that the rules need to change, they all recognize that the current ones are unrealistic,” he said.

Last Thursday (4), the event was attended by the President of Italy, Sergio Mattarella, who warned that the EU must show “unity, solidarity and joint effort to defend” its values.
