Last month, during the Star Wars Celebration in London, we learned more about the future of the famous galaxy far, far away. In an interview with Empire today, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy shares her release strategy for the saga’s upcoming films and reaffirms her intention to make each release an event.
Kathleen Kennedy is firm: one mistake Lucasfilm is not going to repeat, as they did in the late 2010s, producing Star Wars movies to meet the deadline. As ComingSoon and Dark Horizons report, they instead plan to adopt another successful franchise marketing strategy…
I often mentioned Bond. It happens every three or four years, and there wasn’t that pressure to feel like you had to have a movie every year. I think that was very important to Star Wars. We need to make this an event. It’s much better to tell the truth and that we’re going to make these movies when they’re ready to be made and release them when they’re ready to be released.
future projects
The result will be three films that follow the Jedi at very different points in history, with the era represented in the “Mandoverse” series being the new “present.”
What we are exploring is the evolution of the Jedi. We go back, look at the present, and now we’re going 15 years after the rise of Skywalker.
One of the three films, scheduled for 2025, will see Daisy Ridley return as Rey Skywalker and take place after the fall of the First Order. “The Jedi are in chaos—it’s even a question of how many still exist—and Rey is building a new Jedi order based on the text given to her and given to her by Luke.Kathleen Kennedy explained. The film will be directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy (Ms. Marvel), from a script by Peaky Blinders creator Stephen Knight.
The second project — also untitled — has been billed as a crossover event featuring interconnected stories told in The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, and other upcoming Disney+ shows. It will be directed by Star Wars regular Dave Filoni.
Lucasfilm has also tapped James Mangold ( Logan ) to direct a film centered around Dawn of the Jedi . This will happen thousands of years before the New Hope. In addition to these three new projects, Taika Waititi and Rian Johnson’s Star Wars movies are still in active development.
The entire Star Wars saga can be rediscovered on Disney+.
