With a big smile on his face, at the wheel of his little 2CV, Bourville is about to leave Paris for Italy. But he had barely turned a street corner when a large Rolls Royce driven by Louis de Funes crashed head-on, sending his car crashing to a heap of spare parts. Includes one of the most famous lines of French comedy.
– What have I become? – Pedestrian.
When we think of Gerard Ours Cornius, this famous sequence is one of the first that comes to mind. Shot last by the film crew and meticulously prepared by stunt coordinator Remy Julien, this accident marks the meeting between the two protagonists of the feature film and the beginning of their adventure. But did you pay attention to all the details of the scene?
Before the film airs tonight on France 2, catch a freeze-frame at exactly 3 minutes and 21 seconds. Look closely at the look on Louis de Funes’ face when the 2CV has just been blown to pieces, and when Burville, stunned and outraged, pulls himself out of the wreckage and carries it back in his arms.
At this very moment, despite the fact that the scene could only be shot once due to its technical complexity and so the actors had no room for error, Burville dared to improvise and declared the copy now mythical: “He walks a lot less well now, of course!”
After Bourville announced this proposal, take a close look at Louis de Funes. The latter, surprised by his partner’s sense of humor, suddenly lowers his head to hide an insatiable smile, as noted in the documentary. The Mad Adventures of Louis de FunesIt went to France last January.
This little anecdote, which perfectly illustrates the complicity between the two actors, adds an extra dimension to this famous moment in French cinema.
