Iran has executed 209 people so far this year, a spokesman for the United Nations human rights office said on Tuesday, describing the country’s record in this area as “abominable” and calling for an end to executions.
“UN Human Rights Chief Volker Turk today expressed his dismay at the shockingly high number of executions in Iran this year,” Ravina Shamdasani said at a news conference in Geneva.
“On average this year, more than 10 people were sentenced to death each week in Iran, making it one of the largest executioners in the world,” he added, saying most were for drug-related offences.
