Bean prices continued to rise in April and the basic basket is most expensive in 14 capitals

Cost of basic food basket increased in 14 out of 17 capital cities, according to National Basic Food Basket Research

The price of beans increased again in 17 Brazilian capitals during the month of April, after having already become more expensive in March. The rise in prices accompanied the overall cost of the basic basket, which became even more expensive in 14 of the 17 capitals surveyed.

Black beans recorded the greatest increase in Vitória (ES), where they were 4.96% more expensive. Already in Campo Grande (MS) the carioquinha cost 7.96% more.

According to the research report, the possible cause of the increase in bean prices is due to lower supply of black beans in the off-season. As for Rio de Janeiro’s wheat, the low productivity of the crops, due to the rains, has reduced the quantity offered of quality wheat, while the demand has not decreased, driving up the prices on the shelves.

The data comes from the National Survey on the basic food basket, carried out by the Inter-union Department of Statistics and Socio-Economic Studies (He said), released this week.

Potatoes have also become more expensive in the last month. The largest increase was recorded in Campo Grande, where prices increased by 26.88% over the period. In São Paulo there was a drop of -0.59%.

Conversely, the price of soybean oil it decreased in all capitals in April, due to the record harvest recently recorded in Brazil. In the cumulative 12 months, the highlights of the reduction in product prices go to Belo Horizonte, where a change in prices of -32.03% was recorded; and Campo Grande, where the reduction was -31.4%.

The rise in prices was reflected in the total cost of a basic basket in April: it rose in 14 of the 17 capitals analyzed in the survey.

Prices increased the most in Porto Alegre, where it cost an average of R$ 783.55 (5.02%) and in Florianópolis, with an average value of 769.35 (3.65%). São Paulo continues to have the most expensive basic food basket in the country, averaging R$794.68 (1.59% more expensive than in March).

The reductions in the prices of the basic basket were instead felt in three capitals: Natal (-1.48%), Salvador (-0.91%) and Belém (-0.57%).

Considering the current minimum wage of R $ 1,320 and the 7.5% discount on social security, the workers of São Paulo had to commit 56.51% of their pay to buy a basic food basket sufficient to feed an adult for one month. In March, the percentage spent was 64.95%, when the minimum wage was R$ 1,302.
