In a post-apocalyptic world where Korea is a desert, oxygen is the scarcest and most precious commodity…
Netflix has released this Friday what may be its new Korean genre phenomenon after ‘The Squid Game’, ‘Kingdom’ and ‘We are dead’: ‘The Black Knight’, a science fiction series in a post-apocalyptic future in which oxygen is the currency.
The series ‘The Black Knight’ (not to be confused with the Martin Lawrence comedy with which it shares its title, also available in the Netflix movie catalog) poses a bleak scenario. We are in the year 2071, 40 years after a meteorite hit planet Earth and wiped out 99% of the world’s population.. The Korean peninsula is a desert and the air quality means that the few remaining survivors have to wear a mask that transforms oxyanium, a residual mineral from the meteorite, into oxygen.
As in the best science fiction series, Society is divided and inequality is the engine of conflict. Korea has been separated into three social classes: those who live in the Core, a place full of vegetation where the elite reside, those of the special district, around the core, and the inhabitants of the general districts, giant housing estates prepared for They can survive in the desert. All of them have a QR code tattooed on their hand that identifies and classifies them, but there is a fourth “unofficial” label that is refugees, those who have not been selected or have been expelled from large organized cities.
The protagonist of this story is 5-8 (Kim Woo-bin), an oxygen delivery man of which we only know its identification code. Due to the toxic atmosphere, the survivors need to periodically replenish their oxygen reserves, and for this there is a service armored trucks that cross the desert in the style of ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’ facing motorized hordes of looters.
The dream of becoming a delivery man is the only way out for many refugees, including Yoon Sa Wol (Kang You Seok)who trains daily to achieve it with the help of Jung Seol-Ah (Esom)a military woman who hides him in her house in the general district, and her daughter Seoul-Ah (Roh Yoon-seo).
Once the context of the series has been established, the pilot episode culminates with the presentation of the main plot that will occupy our protagonists. 5-8, Sa-Wol and Seul-Ah will have to join forces to uncover a conspiracy orchestrated by the Cheonmyeong organizationthe corporation that rules Korea from the Core, and fight for social equality and the survival of refugees.
Mystery, action, science fiction, persecutions… Korea once again conquers the top of the Netflix series with a series that you will devour this weekend.
