The dossier indicates two deaths of LGBTQIA+ people every three days in Brazil in 2022

Data released by the Observatory for Deaths and Violence against LGBT+ show that most of the victims are transgender women

Two LGBTQIA+ people died every three days in Brazil in 2022. Of this total, 83.5% were murdered. At least this is what the data from the Observatory of deaths and violence against LGBT+ in Brazil, published on Thursday 11, indicate.

According to the document, 273 LGBTQIA+ people died violently in the country, of which more than half of the victims were trans women or transvestites (159 dead). Gay men are the second group that died the most in 2022, for a total of 96. Trans men or transmasculine and lesbian people had 8 deaths.

Homicide is the leading cause of death in both groups (134 trans or transvestite women and 86 gay men). The average age of the victims was between 13 and 75, but most were between 20 and 29 years old.

Even if there is a decrease compared to the numbers of 2021, when the dossier recorded 316 deaths, Brazil remains the champion in the world ranking of these crimes for 14 years, followed by Mexico, with 120 deaths. In 2020, 237 homicides were confirmed.

“Brazil is the country where the most LGBT people are killed in the world”, concluded Alexandre Bogas, founder of the NGO, Brazil Agency.

Violence Marks Survey

Thirty-five different causes of violent death have been recorded, but the main ones are death by gunshot (74) and death by stabbing (48). The list of means used includes beatings, stoning and strangulation.

According to the Observatory it was not possible to identify the cause of the death of 43 victims. On the other hand, Bogas analyzes that Brazil is a violent country, with a high number of homicides in general, and this is particularly reflected in the LGBTQIA+ population. Some cases have aggravating factors, such as the disfigurement of the victims’ faces, the cutting of the genitals and rape.

“There is more cruelty because we are seeing that the person is LGBT in the processes we follow in the cases,” he adds.

The survey was conducted by the Associação Lugar LGBTI+, the National Association of Transvestites and Transsexuals (Antra) and the Brazilian Association of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transvestite, Transsexual and Intersex (ABGLT). The dossier will be launched next Tuesday, 16, at 4 pm, in Brasilia, together with the Ministry of Human Rights and Citizenship and the National Secretariat for the Rights of LGBTQIA+ Persons.
