The image of Dicesar ao relent actually shows the cruel side of the pursuit of fame on TV

‘A Grande Conquista’ exposes desolation to attendees deluded by media visibility and a disproportionate reward for sacrifice

“There is no triumph without loss, no victory without suffering, no freedom without sacrifice.” The line written by JRR Tolkien in ‘The Lord of the Rings’ would serve as a catchphrase for the busiest participants of ‘The Great Achievement’.

Record’s reality show demands absolute dedication from anyone aspiring to win the competition. Hunger, cold, loss of privacy, inadequate hygienic conditions, forced coexistence with hostile and toxic profiles and, above all, the overexposure of one’s own weaknesses and failures, including moral ones.

An image of the program was highlighted on social networks: the competitor Dicesar Ferreira sleeping sitting on the floor, between a wall and a vase, in the external area of the poor scenery that reproduces a village. Swollen face, uncomfortable clothes, under the cold autumn of São Paulo.

The scene has been compared to the thousands of homeless people in São Paulo who face a similar or worse situation every night. The contestant had the option of setting up a tent with a mattress, but ended up in that visually degrading situation. Countless demonstrations of solidarity, as well as the criticisms of those who saw the public moved in a forced overexposure.

In the real world, people in socially vulnerable conditions always live on the borderline between dignity and outrage, life and death. Most of us pass them without seeing them on the sidewalks or simply make a detour so as not to hear the begging. Since they are already part of the decaying urban landscape, they do not cause as much pity. They don’t exist, they just take up space.

Meanwhile, in reality shows such as ‘Big Brother’, ‘A Fazenda’ and ‘A Grande Conquista’, the scarcity of resources becomes entertainment. A large number of viewers are happy to see fights over food, condensed milk, a comfortable bed, a shower with hot water and toilet paper. Taking all of this away from competitors, as in the case of Dicesar, awakens sadism in the public who enjoy the misfortune of others.

“Ah, but they agreed to participate and knew what they were going through,” say reality fans. Why would anyone voluntarily submit to this torture on camera? It’s certainly not just for the ambition to earn the measly R$ 1 million prize offered by Record.

All candidates are aware that the chances of winning are minimal. The most valuable thing is the chance to show off to get out of anonymity or to be in the media spotlight again. Making the television appearance a stepping stone to fame, with possible financial gains upon elimination.

For this, they do not hesitate to face hardships and humiliations – and pay the price of the pejorative label of always being an “ex-reality”. Sometimes they try more than once, like Dicesar. In an interview on Terra’s “Tá no Paredão” in January, he said that Globo “didn’t embrace it” after “BBB10”. Now, she hopes to reach the apotheosis – or, at least, not be discarded so quickly – in the rival channel.

So far, his effort has remained largely unseen. In the first days, ‘A Grande Conquista’ did not reach an average of 5 points in Ibope. What most resonated with him was the melancholy scene when he ended up being overcome by sleep. Undeniably charismatic, the celebrity-seeking artist known by his tagline “adooogo” has more to show. Hopefully there will be time and the edition does not want to highlight only the worst.
