Where were all the Indiana Jones movies filmed?

The Indiana Jones film franchise is recognized for its wide spectrum of filming locations around the world. However, it is common for scenes portrayed in Hollywood movies to be recorded in locations other than those shown on screen. In this sense, below you will find information about each of the Indiana Jones movies.

Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark

Filming began in June 1980 in La Rochelle, France. The scene where the Nazi submarine captures a steamboat was filmed here.

Production then moved to Elstree Studios in England, where interior scenes were shot. The scene where it takes place in the Peruvian temple was filmed in this location.

The film’s scenes set in Egypt were actually filmed in Tunisia. The village located in the capital Cairo was actually filmed in the city of Kairouan. The scene in which Jones, armed with rocket launchers, confronts the Nazis for the ark was filmed in the canyon of Sidi Bouhlel near the city of Tozeur.

Final filming took place in Hawaii, where the opening scene was shot in Peru and another for exterior shots.

Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom

Temple of Doom” is largely set in India, but before the production team started shooting there, the Indian government requested a copy of the script for review. Indian censors found the story racist and xenophobic and ordered the production team to make edits and give final cut privilege. As a result, the production was relocated to the city of Kandy, Sri Lanka where applied paintings and patterns were used for the Pankot village, temple and palace.

Subsequently, production moved to Elstree Studios in England. Other filming took place in the United States, such as in the state of Arizona; in the Snake River Canyon, which is located in Idaho; and in California, in places such as Mammoth Mountain, Tuolumne River, American River, San Joaquin Valley, Yosemite National Park, Hamilton Military Airfield and Grand Couleem Dam in Washington.

The opening scene in Shanghai was actually filmed in two different locations: Elstree’s studios in London and in Kandy, Sri Lanka. Kandy was chosen because it has similar architecture to 1930s Shanghai and a wide main street for the car chase scene.

Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade

Pre-production on the film began in late 1987, also at Elstree Studios, where set construction, set design and costume design began.

The first scenes were shot in May 1988 in southern Spain, in the Tabernas desert, where the tank chase scene took place, which was shot in the place known as “Tortuga”, a collapse of black rocks .

Subsequently, the crew moved to other locations in the province of Almeria for the rest of the shoot. The scenes in the palace of the Sultan of Hatay were filmed at the Almería School of Fine Arts, for example.

After three weeks in Spain, filming resumed in England. The team stayed for ten weeks, using both the sets built at Elstree Studios and the exteriors.

The exteriors of “Brunwald Castle” were filmed at Bürresheim Castle in West Germany.

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

The filming of “The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull” was all done in the United States, as director Steven Spielberg did not want to leave his family.

The desert scenes were filmed in New Mexico, while the campus chase took place at Yale University in Connecticut. The Amazon jungle has been recreated in Hawaii, with waterfall scenes digitally combined with images of Iguazu Falls.

Half of the film was shot at the Los Angeles studios, with other scenes shot at the Chandler, California airport.

Indiana Jones and the Call of Fate

Recording of “The Call of Destiny” began on British soil, with locations at Pinewood Studios and Bamburgh Castle. The team then moved to Scotland, where they filmed landmarks such as the Leaderfoot Viaduct and the village of Glencoe, where a motorbike chase scene was filmed.

Filming then moved to the English capital, London, where a street in the Hackney area was taken over by vintage vehicles and a private residence was chosen for its period features.

Glasgow was also the setting for the production, with footage recreating a parade honoring the Apollo 11 astronauts.

The film crew then headed to Sicily, Italy, where most of the scenes were filmed. Places such as the Orelha de Dionísio cave, the Grotta Dei Corda, the archaeological park of Neapolis, the Maniace Castle, the city of Cefalù and the province of Trapani were the backdrop for the scenes.

Some shots were also taken in Fez, Morocco.
