Warning, this article contains spoilers for Queen Charlotte.
About ten days ago, Netflix released Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Chapter. It’s not a third season – which fans have been waiting a year for – but a spin-off in the form of a prequel that tells the story of the first years of the monarch’s reign.
Shonda Rhimes and her armada of screenwriters have envisioned a sweet and romantic series that blends past and present. Therefore, we see the characters when they are young and adults.
Prince Regent
In the present day – Bridgerton’s action – we find that Queen Charlotte is stirring up a stir at Buckingham Palace to offer her offspring an heir to the throne.
We learn that she and the king had fifteen children and that they had trouble keeping the marriage laws. This is the first time we have heard about them and seen them on screen.
In particular, we meet the Prince Regent, George, who will be king in the future. The character, played by Ryan Gage, recently lost his wife, who died in childbirth.
The latter will most likely play a major role in Bridgerton Season 3, especially if he is pushed by his mother to participate in the wedding season in order to find a new bride.
As a reminder, the next season will focus on the couple Penelope (Nicola Coughlan) – Colin (Luke Newton) and will adapt the fourth volume of the Bridgerton saga written by Julia Quinn.
Romance of Violet Bridgerton and Lady Danbury
Those who haven’t seen Queen Charlotte missed a particularly juicy tidbit: In the spin-off, we learned that Lady Danbury (Ajoa Andoh) had a brief affair with Viole’s father (Ruth Gemmell).
If the Queen’s confidante didn’t dare tell her the truth, matriarch Bridgerton guesses it between the lines during a very emotional scene at the end of the series.
The topic should be revisited in season 3 of Bridgerton. This information could drive the two women, who have become confidants over the years, apart. Or bring them even closer.
Especially since Lady Danbury wants to help Violet get back in the saddle after the death of her husband (killed by a wasp bite)…
